Palk Bay Tamil Nadu

Protection of the environnement in the land of temples

Update 13.11.2007 - Schedule for the Palk Bay Info-Center (german)

The location

The nature conservation area at Palk Bay has been established at the mouth of the river Agni near the village of Velivayal, in the Pattukottai province of Tamil Nadu, known as  the land of temples. The main building is situated close to the mangrove forests, in which rare varieties of animal and plant species are to be found. One can enjoy a guided tour through the grounds. A tree nursery, flower gardens and documentation materials give the visitor a good impression of the area and it's biological framework.

Centre for environmental protection at Palk Bay

The centre for environmental protection at  Palk Bay was established in 2007. It is a co-operative venture of the organisations OMCAR and DEEPWAVE, and works closely together with the Forestry Commission and Universities in Tamil Nadu. In its immediate neighborhood one finds the Muthupet conservation area.

Public relations

The main focus is in instructing the local population on ecological interactions,  targets and tasks of nature and their environmental protection in the Palk Bay littoral. Support for protected areas
In the Palk Bay littoral one can still find various ecologically important living spaces such as mangrove forests, beaches and estuaries which are endangered due to the pressures of an increasing population. The support given by the Centre to environmental protection measures concerns not only the supervising of mangrove re-forestation measures, but also biotope protection and development work

Co-ordination of nature protection activities
Working together with the village councils, district authorities, agricultural and forestry commissions, as well as other relevant associations is a way to enhance nature protection activities.

Exhibitions
Exhibitions, give the visitor, in an interesting way, a deeper knowledge on the landscape, the culture and habitats in the Palk Bay. Topics such as geology, history and evolution are treated and typical coastal biotopes such as mangrove forests, beach littorals, casuarina forests and eelgras fields,
are highlighted. Special shows are created to depict and explain today’s environmental concerns. Children can enjoy their visit in the play-ground provided.

Lectures, meetings and guided nature excursions
The Centre for environmental protection offers lectures, workshops, conferences, information and apprenticeship on the subject of nature and environmental protection. For these occasions a large meeting and conference room is at your disposal. Different events are organised in order to offer the visitor many ways to a better understanding of nature and the landscape in the Palk bay. Special, informative wildlife walks are organised for schools.

Protection of mangroves
Mangroves grow in the tropical tidal zones. Thanks to their support roots they have adapted to life in salt water, and they are needed for crucial matters such as:
  • Coastal protection against tsunamis and tidal waves
  • As a food & other relatede sources ( fish, honey and healing plants)
  • Cultivation of fish and shrimps
  • Protection of coral reefs and eelgras fields against sanding up and over-fertilisation

Mangroves are gravely threatened all over the world. Only our common efforts, nationally and globally can possibly stop the loss of these important coastal forests.

In 2005 the initiatives DEEPWAVE e.V. Hamburg, and OMCAR in Tamil Nadu, established a mangrove cultivation project called MANGREEN, (Mangrove Restoration and Ecology in India). As a first step thousands of mangrove seedlings were planted in order to rebuild the natural protection wall.

With the MANGREEN project we are helping to solve a global and social problem by imparting to the local inhabitants the importance of mangroves forest protection and their future sustainable use.
